My husband Brandon and I gifted his Mom a trip to Mackinac Island, MI for Christmas this past year. We like to take her somewhere every year, just the 3 of us, so that we can spend extra time together. She “not so subtly” told us she wanted to come here LOL…and we were more than happy to come and see this!
This quaint town welcomed us with open arms and it’s safe to say, we fell in LOVE. If you are looking for a slow paced, relaxing trip, I would highly consider planning a trip to Mackinac! *(And know this- it is not Mackin-AC with a C sound…it is Mackin-AW with a W sound- trust me on this…I was told many times haha)
**Be watching soon for other posts from this trip, where to eat in mackinac island and the grand hotel on mackinac island inspiration!**
Before I dive into our getaway… Mackinac Island is one of the only places in the world where cars are not permitted. You must take a ferry to get to the island, and then you will explore the island by horse, bicycle, or foot. It is a MUCH slower lifestyle and such a unique experience! It feels as though you step back in time.
We visited the first week of May, while the island was just starting to awaken and re-welcome visitors. It rained one morning for a couple of hours, but thankfully our hotel provided free umbrellas, so we were good to go! Can’t let a little rain stop ya from a good breakfast!
We stayed at an adorable boutique hotel called The Mackinac House, and it was simply gorgeous. I think maybe it was made just for me. Keep scrolling to see why!
I could NOT stop taking photos of this gorgeous hotel… Enjoy!
It was only 1 block from main street, so we were off the busy road (which in PRIME time would have been very nice, but in this slow time…it wasn’t as much of a factor). We just walked to absolutely anything we wanted to do in town!
These bright colors and prints are EVERYTHING! I was so impressed with the aesthetics of this hotel that I asked who the designer was and started following them! Her name is Pam Houtteman with Houtteman Interiors!
How gorgeous is this fresh bouquet?! (and of course the POLKA DOT chairs!)
So many fun games to choose from. We played almost every night!
And can we talk about this horse painting? I know it is different, but I am in LOVE with it…so unique and fun!
How PRECIOUS is this breakfast bar?!? We absolutely loved sitting here and enjoying our fresh coffee in the mornings. (I also love the navy behind the white! Pops of color like that just make me happy!)
These next few pictures are of our room. It was decorated so beautifully. Her use of colors and the stark white contrast was impeccable.
Swooning over this scallop detail! I will be looking up some of these for myself. Where will I put it? No idea, but I am not worried about logistics right now LOL
This headboard!!!! SWOOOON!
Every detail was truly STUNNING.
Obsessed with this green + gold combo in the bathroom! I have been looking for the perfect green, and I do believe this is it. I plan to reach out to the designer to find out the actual color.
I mean seriously, isn’t this the most adorable boutique hotel EVER?! I could go on and on, but let’s move on to more details of our trip!
We took a carriage tour of Mackinac with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. We all agreed it was absolutely this is a must-do while in Mackinac! The guide is so knowledgable about the area, and it is just so relaxing and beautiful!
We also visited Fort Mackinac, there is SO much history here. I have a video of the firing of the cannon over on my Travel Instagram… you can follow along for more behind the scenes of our travels in my stories!
Can we just take a moment to admire the beautiful sunsets over Lake Huron?! Truly breathtaking.
I am always a sucker for any lighthouse that I can find. I just find them so nastalgic.
As our time on Mackinac Island came to an end, part of me will always stay. It’s seriously one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been in my life. With no cars on the island, it’s just a different way of life. Have you been to Mackinac Island, MI? Or is it on your bucket list?? Feel free to ask any questions you have, and I will do my best to answer them!

I live in Michigan and we visit the island often. It’s about 4 hours away from us. We stayed at the Grand Hotel one time in the Lincoln room. It is absolutely beautiful! We’ve also walked the Mackinac bridge several times on Labor Day. Fun 😊
Glad you were able to visit!

We went there in July, just for the day. Loved the horse carriage tour. The carriage stopped by the Grand Hotel & I took a picture. Many years ago I saw the movie Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour & Christopher Reeve. Part was filmed at the hotel. You should watch it.
