Sorry if this wasn’t the prime of your life, but the 90’s for me rock! A few years ago, I was made aware of some stations on Pandora that sent me back in time. While I typically listen to Christian music, I do find some time to reminisce on some other great music. Two stations that I have really enjoyed are the “Whitney and Mariah Station” (Go divas!) and the “90’s Country Station” (Go Garth, Dixie Chicks, and Lonestar). Let me just go ahead and say out front, I am not saying I endorse any of these people and their lifestyles or choices, but it’s amazing how a song can come on and it takes you back to a time in your life and brings back emotions and memories. I actually caught myself the other day just smiling as I was singing an old hit. The reflection on the music makes your heart tender and stirs up emotions and love from a time long-gone.
In Revelation, letters were written to seven particular churches. One of those churches was the church in Ephesus. The church received some encouragement for some of the good things they had done, but they had lost one thing . . . their first love.
“I know all the things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.” Revelation 2:2-5
The Church of Ephesus had lost their first love and had fallen from the relationship they had initially with God and with each other. There are times that our Christian faith can become this way, too. The routineness of life and the complacency of our faith can lead to a loss of excitement, praise, and love that we once held for God and for other believers. Just as hearing those hits from the 90’s can take me back to a particular time and bring emotions to the forefront, reflecting on our Christian faith can take out our stony heart and replace it with new love. Think back to the day that He saved your soul! Think back to those times where your heart was exploding for your love for Christ and others. Pray that God would give you a fresh anointing of His Spirit and awakening in your soul. Many times, reflection on the past and the blessings, faithfulness, and love He has shown throughout the years can revive our soul. Feel revitalized in your faith and bring back your first love!
