Birds are so popular right now in home décor. Birds are showing up on pillows, curtains, plates and wall art. They are everywhere! Sometimes the best way to incorporate a new design is starting with something simple and neutral. I decided I wanted a bird perched on a pedestal, so I set out to find a bird, and Hobby Lobby came through! In the spring shop garden section, I found a perfect bird, BUT it was not the color I was hoping for…which was no problem, because that’s an easy fix! You won’t believe what I used as the pedestal!

For this project, I used the following supplies:
- Bird (I found mine at Hobby Lobby for 40% off)
- Something for a pedestal (I used a antique brass fixture backplate, but a piece of wood will work)
- Waverly chalk paint in white
- Apple Barrel white glossy paint
- folkArt metallic paint in Sahara Gold
- Foam paintbrush
- Hot glue gun
I found this light fixture plate at a thrift store in a miscellaneous hardware bucket for twenty five cents. The brushed antique brass finish was VERY 1990’s, so I refreshed it with a few coats of gold acrylic paint.
While that was drying, I used white chalk paint to paint the little gray bird.
After the chalk paint was dry, I painted a glossy white over the chalk paint. I wanted a bit of sheen on the bird to complement the gold base.
After both pieces were dry, it was time to assemble! I love the smooth gold appearance of the base.
I applied hot glue around the center ring and set the bird on top.
Such a SIMPLE project, but it looks so polished and much more expensive than it was to create!
The bird doesn’t need a base, but I love to add just a little something extra to make it different! There are so many possibilities for bases. You could use a wood block or candleholder. I encourage you to think outside of the box and get creative with things you may already have.
I think this bird is perfect setting on a shelf or end table!
Be sure to PIN THIS FOR LATER!
