I can remember a few months back when my son’s teacher came to me and said something in the realm of, that she got nervous every time he raised his hand in class because she knew he was really thinking through and could ask some of the best questions. The issue at hand on this most recent encounter was the thought of life existing on other planets. The teacher had stated that currently Earth is the only planet to have shown signs of the existence of life. My son quickly shot his hand up. “But can they prove it? Have they done enough research to really be able to prove that it doesn’t exist somewhere else?” The teacher stated that based on all the research conducted throughout the years, Earth was the only planet where they had found proof of life. However, she did add that there is much research to still be looked at.
In today’s world, now more than ever, people want to see proof. With the news, internet, and social media, things can be posted and shared, and can go viral, before any proof is given. Sometimes there are cases where situations were taken completely out of context or only partially shown, to gain support. As a society, we are becoming more and more in need of proof in order to truly believe sources. We have been burned by buying into false narratives.
Proof has been important since the beginning of time. People wanted proof in order to commit to something. They wanted evidence before they believed in a cause or believed others were genuinely committed to that cause.
In John 13, Jesus and his disciples are partaking in the Last Supper. This will be the final time they meet together before his arrest. During this ceremonial time, Jesus gave them a new commandment.
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35
Jesus knew that people would want “proof” of the disciples’ allegiance to Him. People would want “proof” that they really believed in Him and were His followers. How would they prove that? By their love for one another. Their love for one another would be proof to the world that they truly were His disciples.
Many people today can say they are Christians, but how many have the proof to back it up? When people look at your life do they see evidence of love for one another? Our love is evidence to show that we genuinely have a relationship with Christ.
Later in Christ’s discussion with his disciples, he went on to say that He is the vine and we are the branches and that people who are believers will bear fruit. This is another area of proof in our relationship to Him.
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
