Have you ever been placed in a situation for which you really felt unqualified? Maybe you end up getting the promotion at work that you weren’t expecting? Maybe you are asked to lead a small group at your church or teach the youth? Maybe people start asking you for advice about various topics in their lives. No matter what the situation might be, more than likely there have been times in your life when you felt less than qualified for the task at hand.
There are times in our lives when God places us in situations where we do not feel qualified because He knows that when we do those things we will not look to ourselves for credit, but will rather give all the praise to Him for anything good that might come of the situation. When we feel like there is no humanly way possible that we are called to a task, then there is less likely a chance for us to become prideful in the completion of it. Feeling unqualified is something that traces back all the way to Old Testament times. God wanted Moses to speak to the Israelites. He wanted Moses to go to Pharaoh as a representative for the Israelites and then also speak to the Israelites about the plans God had for them. Moses spent a lot of time arguing with God about the calling.
“But Moses pleaded with the Lord, ‘O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.’ Then the Lord asked Moses, ‘Who makes a person’s mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.’” Exodus 4:10-12
Moses suffered from a lot of self-doubt. He definitely did not want to step outside his comfort zone. He worried that people wouldn’t listen to him and that he would make a fool of himself stumbling over words. How many times do we question our qualifications for doing something that we know God has called us to do? How many times do we begin to compare ourselves to others and find people more “qualified” that you know God should have called to that task? God wasn’t going to let Moses out of this calling. He did end up providing support for Moses through the addition of his brother Aaron, but God wanted Moses involved in this task.
When we feel less than qualified, we need to know that God has called us for a reason and part of that could be because when we do it, and do not feel adequate, then all the credit will go to God. When others see us stepping into areas or skills that do not correlate to our talents and personalities, then people realize that God is using us in that area. What do you truly believe that God has called you to that you are not stepping into because of self-doubt? Step into who He is calling you to be and use your limitations as a stepping stone for others to see His glory.
