Hello friends! Have you forgotten about me?? Or maybe you thought I have forgotten about YOU! Well, I definitely haven’t. I have still been working hard on this blog, but I have been very busy with our house lately…and guess what? It is under contract! 馃榾
We are in the process of getting the mobile home ready to move into and waiting to get the final draft of our house back from the architect so we can start talking to builders. There is a lot of fun and exciting things happening with Re-Fabbed (and even MORE to come very soon- so stay tuned!!)…and I can’t wait for you to join me on this journey!
But, for today- let’s talk DECOR!
If you are like me, you like to change your decor up continually. I mean, like sometimes I feel like I have a problem. I LOVE change, with decor. I love that I can move things around from room to room, or add in 1 new piece and give a whole new look to a space. By doing this, I never get bored with my space, and it keeps me from going out and spending money on “new” things all the time. You really do only need to change a few things around to get a re-fabbed space. The KEY to doing this is having the right items to interchange.
So, today- I want to share with you my top 10 tips and decor items that I like to use for interchanging decor from room to room, in order to keep things fresh in my home.
**Main tip before I list my favorite items: When choosing interchangeable items, be sure to pick items that you know will match or go well with many different rooms. It is always ok to have those special items that fit a certain room perfectly, but when choosing items that you want to be able to use around the house when you tire of it in one spot, be sure to pick neutral or a color/pattern that will go with different room styles.**
{Pictures of items are just to give you a visual idea of what I like. You can click on the picture to see the actual item to purchase it. These are just items that I loved the looks. Not all prices are reasonable or budget friendly. They are mostly being used for visual purposes only. Some may be affiliates, but I only show items I do love.}
1.) Trays
I love trays because they are so versatile {which you will see me say alot in these next items that I use so much}. You can interchange them in many different rooms. I use them on my dining table {in below picture!}, on my counter in my kitchen, sitting on a dresser with candlesticks and a frame, etc… There are just so many uses for them.
2.) White Decor
This may seem like an odd thing to list, but I will stick to it. I literally love white decor. I love it because I know that no matter what the style or color scheme of a room, it will match. I love picking up great deals along the way, and I am constantly changing things around, so if I buy something white- I know I will have a place for it. Plus, white is so classic. It never goes out of style, and it always adds just the right touch of class to a space. {Above is my DIY Milk Glass Centerpiece}
3.) Candle Sticks
I laugh when I write this, because when I shared my Master Bathroom renovation on Hometalk, a lady bashed me for my use of candlesticks in the bathroom (picture above)! Hey- to each his own. But in all truthfulness, candlesticks are a dime a dozen everywhere you go, and you can use them everywhere! What I love is that they add height to a space. So many people forget that you need varying heights when decorating, and a candle stick is always my go-to. They are budget friendly, and versatile. Win win in my book.
4.) Frames
Oh goodness. I am known as the frame hoarder, and for good reason. I have more frame posts on this blog than you can shake a stick at, but I can’t help it! They are amazing! I LOVE frames. I love pictures in general, so I love to find pretty frames for them to go any and everywhere. They are decorative, functional and versatile {my fave word in this post}. When I think budget friendly, I think frames. Thrift stores, yard sales, and even junk stores have them a dime a dozen. SPRAY PAINT is your friend, so grab some funky looking frames, paint them and hang those bad boys up {or put on shelves…you know- just wherever!}. And, in a month or two, take them to a new room and give them new life. *Above picture is my Spring dining room. As you can see, I have a large selection of frames on my built ins…and that is only a very small portion!
5.) Mirrors
I was doing a consultation at a friend’s house the other day, and I was telling her about my obsession with using mirrors in my decorating. I love to use mirrors because they add a big punch to any space, but they are very reasonable… and they be used everywhere! I can’t tell you the number of times I have moved mirrors around from room to room in my house. They change the entire look of a room. I love big mirrors because of the impact, but I also love to buy those cute little funky mirrors that are all kinds of weird shapes too. They are fun to put in unexpected places, and they are easy to move around from space to space too. If I don’t know what to put in a certain place, I always find a mirror. It has never let me down yet!
6.) Pillow Covers
If you follow my blog, you already know that I love me some pillow covers. In fact, I did a whole post showcasing pillow covers for under $5 just the other day! If you didn’t see that, check it out here! I am telling you, if you haven’t used them before, they are a game changer. I was always a “throw pillow” queen, and while I am pretty much still on the throne, those throw pillows are way outdated…but not the coverings 馃檪 Being able to use covers over my existing pillows have saved me tons of money and SPACE. To store a pillow cover in comparison to a full blown pillow is crazy. I love that I can change the whole look of my couch by just changing up a few bucks in pillow covers. It is brilliant, and it is just another way to save money but be able to change things up a notch.
7.) Galvanized Pieces
This one may sound weird, but if you have been out of your house at all in the last year or two, there is no doubt that you have noticed a major fascination with galvanized items. Farmhouse/Industrial look is all the rage these days, and I love it as much as anyone. I don’t have a TON of it, but I do have a few pieces…and I love them because they are neutral and so incredibly *versatile*…that word again! I consider them a “neutral”, but I am sure that would raise some good arguments with some decorators 馃檪 I don’t care. It is easy to use galvanized pieces throughout your home when you want a change!
8.) Vases
Who doesn’t love a good vase? I mean, they are usually tall- which means they take up some decent space when you need something…and they are easy to layer decor with…and they are usually pretty reasonable. Like frames, you can find them everywhere, and they are easy to paint and change up! I have a lot of vases {two of which were broken in 1 day by my little wild hooligan of a 3 year old!}…and I very rarely sell them when I am purging my decor. They are just one of those items that I always like to have on hand as a “filler piece”. If I don’t know what to put somewhere, a vase is usually a pretty good go-to 馃檪
9.) Baskets
Baskets are awesome to have around to store blankets, magazines, toys, books, junk, and the list could go on. I can’t think of a single room in my home that I wouldn’t want a basket, so it is an easy thing to change up when you get bored with what’s going on in a certain space. TJ Maxx or Michael’s is one of those places that always has a great assortment of cheap baskets. I have gotten so many from there over the years! I also love to find them at thrift stores…and they are easy to paint too, so don’t fret over the current look.
10.) Fun Accent Pieces
I will go ahead and admit it. I am a sucker for owls and elephants. I have several owls, and I have several elephants scattered around my home! {This picture is from the colorful farmhouse that I decorated a couple of months ago!} I can’t help myself. I spot them everywhere I go, and they are always so cute…so I buy them! I use a general color scheme throughout this house {gray, aqua, yellow, lime and hints of lots of other colors}, so when I find a fun color of one of those animals- I buy it. They typically run me anywhere from $5.99-$9.99, so it is a great price point and a fun accent. I find a lot at Gordman’s and TJ Maxx, just in case you wondered. I also love other fun accents, such as random shapes or birds or little decorative boxes. The list could go on forever on this one, but I love quirky items that add some flair to my space…I bet my elephants have been in every room of my house by now, and that is no joke!
So, basically…the main thing to remember as you decorate any home is to choose items that you can use in other areas of your home as well. Shopping your own home is the cheapest and easiest way to change up a space. It is FUN and it is so budget friendly, so the next time you are itching to buy some new decor, keep some of these tips in mind. You will thank me for it later 馃檪
