Our beach condo is finally complete, and if you missed the big reveal, you can find it here! When designing and selecting the textiles and decor pieces, I had a vibe I was hoping to achieve, while also staying within a reasonable budget. I was on the hunt for unique pieces, and I found an awesome statue! However, it needed to be “re-fabbed” just a bit to truly make it perfect! Today, I’m going to share how I spray painted a blue heron statue to create an amazing piece of art for our beach condo!
For this quick makeover, I used the following items:
- Blue heron statue purchased from HomeGoods
- Krylon Premium Metallic Gold Spray Paint
- Protective gloves
- Drop cloth
First, let’s talk about how fabulous this statue is! When I laid eyes on it, I knew it was coming home with me! The details, the height, the weight…he was almost perfect, BUT the color and white wash finish were a little too neutral for me. I wanted a bold color that would make a statement, so what color did I choose? You guessed it…GOLD!
I packed this bad boy to my car, grabbed some spray paint and went to town!
It’s always a great idea to use gloves when spray painting, because sometimes it will leak from the nozzle if you’re not holding the can upright the entire time. Also, I laid down a drop cloth to avoid discoloring the grass.
To begin the process, I started spraying at the head. You absolutely always want to start at the top and work your way down, because otherwise, you run the risk of the color running or being oversaturated in certain spots.
I sprayed the bird from head to toe, making sure to thoroughly cover the details and indentions. I made sure to take my time and not rush over it.
Here is the final product! I mean, how spectacular does he look?! The gold spray paint gave it a completely different look, and it was exactly the look I was going for! He was now ready for his new home!
This was such a simple and inexpensive makeover!
Some of the best advice I can give you is to never discredit a decor piece because of the color. When you find something that fits the bill in every aspect except color, see if you can easily change it to match your space. In this case, a can of spray paint was all that was needed to make this a perfect piece for our condo! I hope this inspires you to take a second glance at things before turning away.
Now, let’s take a moment to see this little cutie shine in our condo! What do you think of my color choice? What color would you have painted him?
