Even though my canvas was already white, I decided to paint the background white because I feel like the paint glides on easier once it has a nice base!
I picked up this Master’s Touch thick body acrylic paint at my local Hobby Lobby. If you don’t have this, you can absolutely make your own using gel medium with regular paint. Either way, this thick paint adds so much texture and truly makes ALL the difference! Click HERE to see how to create your own thick body paint using gel medium!
First, I painted the American flag “square” in the top left corner (and sides) using the Ultramarine Blue thick body paint.
Next, I grabbed the Red thick body paint and began painting stripes on the canvas. I also painted the sides of the canvas as well!
Repeat steps using the Titanium White thick body paint. Be careful to not mix the red and white, or you will have some pink! If you would like to replicate this, I ended up having 4 red stripes and 3 white stripes on my canvas.
Next, I grabbed the end of my paint brush and dotted the Titanium White thick body on top of the blue as my “stars”, AKA whimsy dots!
I took my white puff paint from Hobby Lobby and made “squiggles” on my red stripes and around the edge of my blue! This was like the icing on the cake- SO fun and whimsy!
I decided to grab this white glitter and sprinkled it all over on my canvas. How FABULOUS?!? This was like the SPRINKLES on the cake! I looove glitter.
REAL LIFE here… I was not loving these dots. But that’s the good thing about paint… you can always scrape it off and start over! So, that’s exactly what I did!
I scraped off the white dots, added a little more blue paint and sprinkled some iridescent glitter on, and I am NOT disappointed! I truly LOVE it now!
If you aren’t loving something, don’t be scared to change it! It is MUCH easier to fix while the paint is still wet than to live with a project you don’t love!
DRUM ROLL please… the final reveal! I went back and added a few finishing touches with my puff paint after the paint dried the next morning!
Isn’t this so FUN?! I can’t get enough of Patriotic crafts lately!!!
What do YOU think!?! If anything, I hope this project encouraged you to give thick bodied acrylics a try!
