One thing I have learned over the years is to ALWAYS shop the home decor clearance section! Many times you will find items with great shape, size or texture, but it may not be your style. Never discredit a an item just because it’s not exactly what you’re looking for…especially if it’s on sale for a bargain! I saw this sign recently at PopShelf, and although it wasn’t my style, it sparked some creative thoughts! With a few extra supplies, I turned this simple white sign into an adorable Christmas piece! I think y’all will love it!
For this project, I used the following supplies:
- “Good Vibes Welcome” sign from PopShelf
- Re-Fabbed Christmas scrapbook paper
- Waverly chalk paint in white
- Apple Barrel paints in Cameo Pink, Flamenco Red and Kelly Green
- Mod Podge
- Pom poms – PopShelf
- Small wooden letters – PopShelf
- Scissors
- Paintbrushes
- Hot glue gun
First, I used white chalk paint to cover the existing letters and designs on the tiles. I just covered the black letters, but it would be best to cover the entire tile for a smoother look when you repaint them.
It took 2-3 coats to completely cover the black text.
Now, I had a blank slate to work with!
I knew I wanted to incorporate the colors from my re-fabbed “whimsy workshop” scrapbook paper, so I decided to cut out some of the trees to use on the sign.
Next, I painted the tiles alternating between Kelly Green, Flamenco Red and Cameo Pink. You will want to apply about 3 coats to fully achieve the actual color.
Then, I decided to assemble the letters and trees to get an idea of how I wanted to lay everything out. I found these letters at PopShelf for only $2! They were the perfect size for the tiles!
I could have chosen many different words for the sign, but I decided on “Jingle All the Way.” I wanted something fun to go along with the cheerful colors! I used a few of the trees to fill in the blank tiles.
Using Mod Podge, I glued the trees to the blank tiles.
Then, I applied just a dab of hot glue to the back of the letters and secured them to the tiles.
Finally, I grabbed a few pom poms from an assortment I purchased at PopShelf and glued them in little bundles on the sides.
I am sorry y’all…but I am tooting my own horn on this one!!! SO STINKIN’ CUTE!!!
I absolutely LOVE how I transformed this very dull, white sign into a cheerful and fun Christmas sign! Next time you are browsing through the clearance, I hope you reconsider that piece that just isn’t quite your style. With a little paint and creativity, you can perform a makeover and create your own masterpiece!
