DIY Christmas trees are one of my absolute favorite crafts to create at Christmastime! They are so fun and versatile, and although Christmas merchandise is not available in most stores right now, I have a super cute idea for you made from Dollar Tree items you can find in stores NOW!
For this project, I used the following supplies:
- Round pizza pan – Dollar Tree
- (3) assorted craft fabric scraps – Dollar Tree
- (3) wood hanging arrows – Dollar Tree
- Waverly chalk paint in the colors Plaster and Ink
- Foam paintbrush
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Tape measure
- Pencil
The hanging arrows are the base of the fabric trees, so I turned them vertically. I bought one tall, slender arrow and two shorter arrows.
I chose three coordinating fabrics from the Dollar Tree craft section, but you could also use one inch ribbon as well!
First, I needed to cut my scrap pieces. Each piece of fabric is 18″x21″ and comes folded. When you unfold the fabric, you will have several creases. Each piece of fabric had a crease around 5″-6″ on the side. To make things easier, I cut along the crease so that all my scrap pieces would be 5-6″ long. Then, I cut that piece of fabric into strips about 1-1.5″ wide. This will give you about 18 strips of fabric that are about 1″x5″.
Here is my stack of strips for my first tree.
Next, I used my pencil to sketch a triangle shape at the bottom to be my guide for gluing the strips to the arrow. I made sure the angle was about the same as the angle at the top of the “tree.”
Then, I laid the first strip along the line, but extended it past the tip of the triangle by about an inch. I glued the strip to the wood base with hot glue.
For the next strip, I simply overlapped the first strip. I placed a dot of hot glue on top of the first strip and glued down the second strip.
I continued to repeat this process until I reached the top of the tree. I only applied glue to the tip of the strip in the center of the wood. The strips were only attached at the end, so they laid freely off the wooden board.
You may have some strips left over, and that is perfectly fine!
After you complete the tree, you are going to trim the branches a little. You will notice that a small triangle of wood is exposed at the bottom.
Once you trim the bottom pieces to be even with the wooden base, you can use the trimmed pieces to fill in this space.
You can trim the branches to whatever length you prefer. I ended up trimming mine back even more at the end.
Continue using the same process to create the other trees. If you find that the wood underneath is not fully covered, you can always go in and add additional scraps or dab a little glue to secure the fabric better.
Next, I created a background using the pizza pan. First, I painted the entire top of the pan with black chalk paint. I used the Waverly brand from Walmart in the color Ink.
After the black had dried, I painted over the black with Waverly chalk paint in the color Plaster. I LOVE this nice subtle white color.
I only applied one light coat, because I wanted to see the black peeking through. If needed, you could also lightly sand over it with a fine grit sandpaper to reveal more of the black.
After the pan had dried, it was time to glue the trees to the pan. I applied hot glue to the top and bottom of the tall house and glued it in the center of the pan.
Then, I glued the other trees on each side.
I absolutely love how simple and cute these trees are! The scrap fabric creates a herringbone pattern, and I think it would be so fun to mix different fabrics together!
What are your favorite colors to decorate with at Christmas? Are you a more traditional red and green, or do you prefer neutral decor?
