Yarn has so many possibilities when you are crafting! With all the varieties and sizes of yarns available, you can pretty much find multiple purposes for it. Today, we’re going to take just regular standard yarn that you can grab from Walmart for $3 and make some fun pom poms!
All you will need for this project is yarn, cardboard, scissors and a box cutter or utility knife.
Pom poms can be made in many different sizes, and they can be used for garland, ornaments,
gift wrapping and so many other things, so let your creativity run wild when you make these!!
Your cardboard size will determine the size of the pompom. If you want a pompom that is two inches in diameter, your cardboard will need to be two inches wide. If you want a 3 inch diameter, then make your cardboard 3 inches wide.
First, I cut my template out that I was going to use. I cut the cardboard to the desired width, and then I cut a strip out from the center. The open space in the center is needed to secure the center of your pom pom with yarn. This is where you will need a utility knife to cut the center without bending the cardboard.
Next, you are going to wrap the yarn around the cardboard many times. The more times you wrap the fuller the pom pom will be. I like really full pom poms, so I am going to wrap it very thick!
Once you have achieved your desired fullness, cut the yarn.
Now, you are going to take two pieces of yarn and tie it around the center of the yarn ball. Two pieces are not absolutely necessary, but I want to make sure it is very secure and does not break. Make sure to pull it tight and tie it in a double knot.
Then, you will cut the sides of your yarn ball by sliding your scissors along the cardboard, underneath the yarn. Cut as close to the edge of the cardboard as possible!
You will cut both sides, and then push the pom pom through the center cut out. Now you can fluff the pom pom and trim any straggling pieces.
Sometimes in crafts, you might need to connect two pom poms or have them hanging from a string. If you want to connect it with a string, simply take a strand of yarn and tie it in a knot around the pom pom.
Now you can hang the pom poms or add them to a project of your choice!
How cute and easy are these to make?! I think these would be so fun to create in bold colors for
decorations in a playroom or kid’s room (or of course, CHRISTMAS decor and garlands!!!)
What do you plan to make with all of YOUR pom poms????
