Everyone has seen Christmas villages setting out in stores and you probably even remember THIS ONE in my own house, but have you ever seen a Halloween village? While browsing Goodwill after Christmas last year, I ran across several little ceramic Christmas village buildings for only $0.99 each!!! Of course, they came home with me! A few days ago, a fun idea came to mind, so pulled out the houses and got to work! This is a super simple and inexpensive transformation that I think you will LOVE!
For this project, I used the following supplies:
- (6) ceramic Christmas village buildings
- Waverly chalk paint in Ink
- Paintbrush
I chose chalk paint for this project, because it provides great coverage, and I wanted a nice matte black finish. The Waverly chalk paint can be purchased inexpensively from Walmart.
The houses and buildings all had snow or Christmas decorations displayed on them, but that didn’t matter, because I would be painting the entire house black. If you have several buildings to choose from, try to look for ones that have a lot of shape and dimension. This quilt shop piece was perfect, because it had the second story tower and dormer, and I loved the front door! I could definitely see this looking like a Halloween house!
The first thing I did was dust off all the pieces. Ceramics can have a rough texture, which makes using a dusting cloth a little difficult. For pieces like this, I like to use a paintbrush to clean and dust around the details. This cheap chip brush worked great!
Next, I started painting all of the houses. I painted everything black except the bottom. It only took one coat of the chalk paint to completely cover the original colors.
The painting process went super fast. Once painted, I allowed them to dry for a couple of hours before moving them.
I think they turned out awesome! After being painted black, they totally look like a Halloween village!
You could definitely go in and add additional colors or details if you wanted, but plain black is so versatile and will allow me to change up accent colors and how I decorate with them.
Since the buildings all have holes in the bottom, you can set them on top of lights! I picked up some Halloween decorative cloth from Dollar General that resembles cheese cloth, and it worked perfectly with the Halloween vibe!
What do you think? I really love the end result! I can’t decide how I want to decorate with them, because there are so many possibilities!聽
If you love a fun and spooky vibe, this is definitely the project for you! Easy peasy, y’all!
