Patriotic red, white and blue home decor is typically seen in stores prior to Memorial Day, but I LOVE displaying patriotic decor at various times throughout the year! It definitely never goes out of style! I picked up a couple of star wreath forms at Dollar Tree earlier this spring, and I recently pulled them out to create a door hanger for the Fourth of July. I think you’ll be surprised how I used them!
The only items I had to purchase for this project were the wreath forms and a star cut out from Dollar Tree. The rest of the items I had on hand.
For this project, I used the following supplies:
- (2) Star wreath forms from Dollar Tree
- Wooden star from Dollar Tree
- Apple Barrel paints in White, Cobalt Hue and Flag Red
- Foam paint brush
- Foam circle daubers
- Assorted red, white and blue ribbons
- Craft wire or zip ties
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- White spray paint – Krylon Fusion All-In-One in Gloss White
- Wire cutters
First, I painted the wooden star with the white paint. It took three coats to fully cover the brown wood.
While the star was drying, I took the two wire forms outside and painted them with white spray paint . They only needed one coat. I used Krylon Fusion All-In-One spray paint in white gloss.
After the white wooden star had dried, I painted red and blue polka dots onto the star using the circular daubers. I used all three sizes and scattered them around. Make sure you have some only partially on the star to give it an accurate pattern.
After the paint had fully dried on all the pieces, I took my two wire stars and laid them out with the bottom one straight and the top one slightly tilted to the left. The stars were slightly overlapping.
You can see in the photo below how they are overlapping at points where it will be easy to connect them with wire.
Then, I cut a piece of crafting wire about 4″-5″ long with my wire cutters.
Next, I wrapped the crafting wire around the metal wires to secure them tightly. I did this at two spots. You could also use zip ties instead of crafting wire.
Once the metal stars were attached, I added the wooden star. The wooden star already had a small hole for a hanger, so I turned it so the hole would be at the bottom left point. I slid the point under the middle wire and angled the star to the right a little. Using the crafting wire, I secured the bottom left point to the metal frame.
I needed one more place to attach the wooden star to ensure that it was secure. To do this, I flipped over the stars in the position that I wanted them. I applied some hot glue over the wire that touched the star and placed a piece of ribbon over the wire and glue.
The fabric really helps keep it all connected and prevents the wire star and wooden star from separating.
This is what it looked like after I had connected all of the stars! Now, it just needed to be spiffed up a bit!
The first addition I added was a Re-Fabbed bow! I had several red, white and blue ribbons in my stash, so I grabbed an assortment and threw together a bow!
I secured the bow in the center where it would cover the wire used to hold everything together.
Next, I wanted to add a little color to the white wreath frames so they would pop a little better. I cut several strips of ribbon around 5″ long. I decided to wrap the strips around the frame.
I left a little space between my ribbons, but you can fill it all in if you prefer!
Here is the finished product! I think it looks so fun and fabulous! This was such a simple and inexpensive design! There are many different ways you could connect the stars. I chose a vertical design, but it would be cute horizontal as well!
I hope this inspires YOU to get a little crafty and design your own door decor!
Don’t forget to PIN this for later!
