If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me, “I wish I could afford to change my decorations as often as you do”, I would be one rich 31 year old. Truth is, I have NO more money than most people. I live on a budget, and with as much as I love to change things up, it is very rare that I will ever spend very much on a particular item, especially a decor item.
I wanted to share a few secrets with you as to how I am able to change up my decor so often without spending a ton of money. {And at the end of the post, I share several of my favorite decor finds, along with their budget friendly price tags!}
What I want to focus on mostly in this post is the decor part of decorating! {Furniture and DIY projects will be another post, at a later time.}
1.) I am always on the lookout for deals!
It really doesn’t matter where I go, I have my eyes open for a good deal. I pretty much always go straight to the clearance rack of any store, and I try to think outside of the box. Just because something says it goes in a certain area of a home does not mean that is where it has to go. Be creative! Also, look in seasonal sections of stores. Sometimes I have found the cutest wreaths, vases, frames, etc… in a Christmas or Easter clearance section of a store, so they were marked down super cheap, yet they didn’t “look” seasonal. These are the best kinds of deals!
Note: I am not promoting spending just to spend. I usually always have a portion of my budget that I set aside for decor if I find something that I love {because that is an important part of my budget, ya know?!}.
Another piece of advice in this area may be seen as bad advice by many, but it has always worked for me…so I will share!
You do NOT have to always have the perfect place in mind for the item you buy! {gasp!} I have always heard that you need to have a place in mind for everything you purchase so that you don’t purchase things you do not need. To me, some of my best buys have come from buying things that I had no idea where it may go. That was part of the fun! When I got home, I moved things around until I found that “right” place! This leads me to my next point!
2.) I shop my own home ALLLL the time!
Part of the fun of having an array of very budget friendly decor is that I can constantly change things up around the house and never get bored with a certain look! Small changes in a space can make the biggest impact. There is nothing I love more than to shop from my own home and change things up. I mentioned in my Naked House post that after Christmas I changed things up alot, and that is not the only time of year I do changes. I honestly change anytime I feel like it, which is a lot 🙂 By having so much variety, I can change things and nobody ever recognizes the pieces from different rooms because it looks so different!
Some advice on doing this:
I have a home with a wide variety of personality, as you have probably noticed, BUT my home does have a general flow. Many of my rooms are very colorful, yet many have gray walls that I consider neutral- with pops of color mixed in with my decor choices. By doing things this way, the majority of my home decor can be switched around all over the house. An example of this is that even though all of my rooms are different, they all have hints of aqua, white and natural wood touches {and other interchangeable colors, but these are the most prominent}. These are the main colors that I change the most often. I try to be consistent throughout my home so that I can save money when it is time to change some things up. Using neutrals really help, especially with statement pieces {like furniture} or larger pictures/canvases.
3.) I sell older decor items that I no longer want!
If you are my friend on Facebook, you know that I am always selling home decor for cheap! When I have some new items that I am wanting to implement, I go through and get rid of a few things that I no longer want to use. Most of these items are still awesome pieces, but I am just finished using them. Because I don’t have much invested in any of my decor, I can sell for a good price and others are more than happy to snatch them up! I have a lot of success with this method, and it keeps me in check without becoming a decor hoarder 🙂 Win! It also keeps my pocketbook happy with a few extra dollars to go towards my next bargain.
Even though I sell a lot on Facebook, I am also always on the lookout to buy! You don’t always have to buy from a retail store. In fact, some of my cutest items have come from yard sales or thrift stores. They are the most fun items to incorporate into your decorating, and they are usually dirt cheap!
So, in talking about all of my budget decorating, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite budget finds, along with their price tag and store name!
Light gray lantern $19.99 w/ extra 15% off at Kirklands! Lanterns are all the rage right now, so this will be one I can use all over for a very long time!
Silver flower pillow- $12.99 TJ Maxx {This pillow has been used for years in numerous rooms in our home.}
Milk pitcher $5 from local booth mall. This has been a fun piece to use in the kitchen and dining room. I move it around all the time. Such a classic!
Ampersand symbol $10 Hobby Lobby! I love using symbols like this, and since this one is so neutral, it can be used any and everywhere! I love this one.
This cute little clock was on sale at Kirklands for $7.00. I love the kind of whimsical look of this, and I can picture it being on my mantle or my built ins! Such a fun find.
Galvanized “R”. This is a large letter that makes a big impact. It is in my office right now, but with its versatility, it can be used anywhere! $15 Hobby Lobby
This white piece (kind of a vase? Not sure what to call it. I just really like it!} was a Big Lots find for $20. It has been all over the place, but seriously…how cute is it? This is a picture of it being used on my fall mantle.
These elephants have been such a fun way to add color to so many different spaces in my home. They were just $7.99 each at TJ Maxx!
This sequined “hello” pillow is so versatile, but guess what? It isn’t a pillow! It is a pillow COVER. These are my very favorites because they are SO cheap, and you can use any pillow underneath, and you don’t have to find storage for your older pillows when you want to change them out. GAME CHANGER! This one was from Hobby Lobby for $5.00. This picture was in my office, but I have already moved it to my living room! Hobby Lobby has tons of them for $10 and under with your 40% off coupon, or if they are running a half off sale on them. I have a lot, but I don’t have pictures of all of them to show you. Trust me, these are awesome.
p.s. The ruffle pillow is a TJ Maxx find for $12.99.
One more {one in front} pillow cover. This one was $5.99 before discount from Hobby Lobby!
This gold frame was from Ross Dress for Less. I love this store because it has awesome deals on decor! It was $7.99. How cute is it?! I can use it anywhere. For frames, I won’t list a bunch of pictures, I will just say- I buy LOTS from places such as TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Burke’s Outlet, Hobby Lobby, and Marshalls. These stores have the CUTEST frames, and I rarely EVER spend over $10.
So, I showed you a few of my favorite pieces that I use interchangeably, but there are LOTS more! The possibilities are endless when you know how to shop for bargains that will go in more than 1 room!
What are your favorite tips for budget decorating? There are SO many. I would love to hear some of your ideas!

Please let me know if you decide you are “tired” of the elephants. Samm’s room is elephants and these would be perfect 🙂
