You hear it quite often in the sports realm, but sometimes it leaks over into the music and entertainment industry as well. The G.O.A.T. or otherwise known as the “greatest of all time.” You’ll hear the arguments as people try to prove that their person is indeed the greatest that has ever participated in that particular event. Probably the most debated area of this would be in men’s basketball. Many would choose and argue that Michael Jordan was the “GOAT” of basketball. They would use evidence like points scored, championships won, and game-winning shots made. And then you would have a few people that would like to argue with names like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and more.
The thing about being the “GOAT” of a sport or industry is that even when the time of participation has passed for this person, their impact and evidence must continue to withstand new people coming into the area. For instance, Michael Jordan’s legacy must continue to hold up against new-comers to the sport every year. His career in the 90’s is being measured against players in 2025 and there may come a time when someone else takes over the title.
In the book of Hebrews, the author talks about Jesus as the Great High Priest in comparison to all the earthly priests who had gone before him and would come after him.
“He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven. Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins. The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weaknesses. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever.” Hebrews 7:26-28
Jesus was the greatest high priest ever. All the other priests had to make daily sacrifices to continue to account for the debt of sin. But Jesus made one great sacrifice and took away all sin for all time. He sacrificed himself and because of that he is the perfect high priest forever. There was not a high priest greater than him during his time on earth and there never will be another high priest as great as him in the future. He is the greatest. We can rest in the fact that He took care of our sins forever and does not have to offer any other sort of sacrifice. Our sins are forgiven because He offered Himself as the sacrifice for people’s sins. Isn’t it great to know that we serve the GOAT?
