Everywhere I go, I聽hear, “What is your style?” Whether it be fashion, decorating, etc…there just “has” to be some certain style that defines you. Or does there? Well, that really is a question I am asking. I am asking myself that very question, actually. The reason is, I truly do not have a “style”, especially when it comes to decorating! Trying to pinpoint me to a specific design style is like trying to pinpoint me to my favorite Little Debbie cake. It ain’t happenin’!
Since this has been on my mind so much lately, I thought I would just kind of explore my spaces a little deeper in聽my current home. {Keep in mind…this is NOT our forever home. Yes, there are things I would do differently if I KNEW I was going to be here for the long haul, so don’t be too hard on me!}
Let’s start with the living room! {You can see the whole reveal HERE.}
First off, I LOVE both of these pillows. The first one is a cover that I found at Hobby Lobby for a mere $5.99, and the second one is a TJ Maxx find. {You will find that these 2 stores are my very faves!} So, I love both of these…but to me, they are 2 different styles. {In fact, the first one is on its side…LOL. Oh well.} I still feel like these 2 styles merge nicely, so I am good聽with it. One thing you will find about me is that if I like it, I go for it. I seriously like so many different things!
Now we have somewhat of a “cutesie” burlap flower. I found this at a local boutique a couple of years ago, and I just loved it. {I also have 2 more that I use in this space.} It adds a real feminine touch to the space, and mixed with the curly branches, it looks so cute.
While this isn’t the best picture {I have the hardest time taking pictures of pictures!}, it shows a small gallery wall in my living room above my love seat. I decided to use all straight lined frames to give it a more cohesive look in this space. Why? No clue…I just did. I actually really like the look of the gallery walls that mix and match a little of everything, and I am currently working on a couple in my own home. But this one, well it is like this. I will be adding more to it, but for now, I do like it. I mixed a little bit of color with the green and aqua, but not much. It is fairly neutral in nature. What style is this? Who knows.
This wreath that hangs on my stairwell is actually a Christmas decoration that I just decided to leave up year round. I put it there last Christmas and just ended up loving it, so it stayed 馃檪 To me, anything goes! What do you think? Would you 聽have kept it, or is it too seasonal?
This handsome owl is just too cool to not display. There is just something about owls. I love them. I actually think in real life that they are pretty creepy, but I love to decorate with them! He sits on my pallet coat rack that I will be revealing later this week! He is ceramic and sits next to one of my paintings. Kind of an odd combination perhaps. Never really thought much of it until I started typing it out. Anywho, I like him!
I wish I knew what to call these. They are in my white vase {contemporary style}, and they are like little circles?! If you know what they are called, let me know so I can sound more educated! 馃檪 I have had them for a few years now, and I like how they are somewhat whimsical. I got them somewhere along the way with no idea what I would do with them, and when I bought this vase, I knew it was the perfect fit! {You can see the full vase in the living room reveal}
On my shoe storage bench, I have an old book that my husband’s grandmother gave us. It is full of children’s stories, and I love it. I thought it looked really cute sitting on this distressed piece of furniture with the nest {totally not what you would call that..} on top. Kind of a vintage look?!
As you can see, I don’t know my style names, and I like a little of EVERYTHING all in one!
Now let’s move on to the kitchen! {Full reveal HERE}
This canvas sign is housed in my aqua kitchen! It is fun, vibrant and contemporary. I LOVE it. I got it at a local boutique because I loved the colors…and I loved the wording. It is certainly true in my home!
Here we have a Hobby Lobby find! I LOVE my pear picture. Do you?! The aqua goes perfectly with my kitchen, and I just love the orangy/coral color in the background. Basically, I love it all the way around. The frame is somewhat sleek and modern, unlike the piece that sits directly under it!
This table is an oldy but a goody! {Is oldy a word?!} I found it for so cheap a couple of years ago and painted a light brushing of antique white chalk paint over it to give it a worn, distressed look. You can see that it totally has its imperfections (look at the front part coming apart), but this little half table has my heart. It is about 1 lb and not big as a minute, but it has so much charm!
So, there you go…modern art with a distressed table directly under it?!
Sitting on the table is a book from my favorite poet~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow! Total nerd alert!!! {Side note..I saw his home while visiting Maine, and I was so excited. My husband did not share in this excitement…but he went, for me.} I also have a little globe that I found at TJ Maxx for $7.99 because I love globes, maps, etc…basically, all things travel related. Then of course, a family photo! I love that picture 馃檪
This is a plate rack that I got for one of my wedding showers 8 years ago. I have always thought it was so cute, so I certainly have no plans of getting rid of it. I have, indeed, changed the plates countless times! These modern, square plates are from Wal-mart. I loved the sleek, white look…and let’s be honest, how perfect are they for that little spot on the wall?!
Sitting on my counter in the corner is a little display made up of a cool ceramic hen (kind of like my owl), a milk pitcher from my grandmother and another wedding shower gift…an aqua treasure box with burlap at the top. Although this is somewhat of a modern kitchen, I have certainly incorporated lsome traditional/or even perhaps “farmhouse?!” pieces in there.
So, to recap…my living room and kitchen are full of a modge podge of styles. Would you agree? Do you see a certain decorating style when you look at them as a whole? I really can’t say that I do. I have said it a million times…If I had 10 houses, I could decorate them all differently and love each one the same. I truly mean that. I love so many different styles. When we move, I doubt that I will have an aqua kitchen. It isn’t because I don’t love mine, because I DO…but I love so many other kinds as well. In fact, I LOVE the farmhouse feel. I do enjoy more color with my farmhouse look…but I love the farmhouse look nevertheless. This house does not have much of that, but that’s not to say my next one won’t. Basically, I want to create spaces that I love. I don’t have to be pinned to a style. I want to be me. If I fit into one category, awesome. If I don’t, awesome. I may be doing this whole decorating thing wrong…and if I am, whoops! At least I am having fun while I am doing it! I sure enjoy you following along for the journey!
Any feedback is welcome! Did you find a certain “style”?!

Your branches look like they might be Lunaria, more commonly known as a money plant.
Yep, oldy is a word, but more commonly spelled oldie, as in older but goodie. (or goody?!!)
I’m like you, my style is all over the place. I am drawn to metal and burlap; turquoise is my favorite color and it has been for 30 years. It comes and goes, and thank goodness it has stayed popular for quite a few years in a row now. Are some of your walls gray? I want to try that as a wall color.Do you consider it a neutral?
Loved this post, it’s made me think!

Thank you, Lynne! And yes…oldie! I usually spell it that way. I knew it didn’t look right but couldn’t pinpoint! HA. In my living room, all of my walls are gray. In the kitchen, they are aqua, of course 馃檪 I do consider gray a neutral. I have often heard it said that it is the “new tan”…don’t know if that is true, but I sure use it ALOT!

Brooke, I love the way you layer your home with all of your favorite finds! That pear picture is totally awesome and even though I live in a house filled with farmhouse neutrals I adore your aqua walls. Hope your week has been a happy one so far, Coco

Thank you Coco!!! I appreciate that so much 馃檪 I’m like you…even though I have a lot of color in my home, I adore the farmhouse look! I seriously love a little of everything! Haha. I have had a great week so far and hope you have as well. Thanks again for stopping by!

Hi Brooke – whatever taste you have – your house is beautiful and you have lots of things that you ‘like’/’love’ and isn’t a ‘house’ supposed to be’ home’? and your ‘home’ is full of the things that you love – so to me that is how it should be 馃檪
I say that I am ‘eclectic’ – because I love so many styles, colours and lots of different things and… like you just fill my ‘home’ with things that I like/love – whether it be ‘old’, ‘new’ or whatever – I really don’t think it matters as long as you like/love it 馃檪
Brooke Riley says
Thank you Denise! I agree 100%!! It is all about what we love. In the end, that is definitely all that matters.
Becky says
I love your styles!! And I know your favorite Little Debbie!!! 馃檪

LOL Yes ma’am…you do know! And thank you 馃檪

The little round leaf plant in the white vase I call money plant. I don鈥檛 know where it got it鈥檚 name but my mom and I have always called it that. Someone else may call it something else but that鈥檚 what I have always called it.
