Recently we had a mini snowstorm in our western Kentucky town. While the prediction of many inches of snow didn’t fully materialize, we did wind up with enough to be out of school for three days. (Northern folks, please don’t frown upon our lack of ability to function in the snow.) I currently have two dogs: a cockapoo and a cavapoo. Of course, when it’s snowy or rainy, they cannot get on a unified schedule and so I have to put on my coat, gloves, sock toboggan, and boots for what feels like a million times to take them outside. After a few days, I looked out my door when I was on one of my 1,000 trips and looked at all the footprints and paw prints throughout the backyard. Anyone that might happen to come by could look at the yard and know that the homeowner had dogs. There was evidence all around the yard.
As I was staring at the prints all throughout my yard, God brought to my thoughts about my Christian faith. Does my life show as much evidence in it that I am a Christian as my yard showed that I am a dog owner? Can others look at my life and see true evidence of my faith?
The gospel of Matthew states, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:16
What good deeds should others see as evidence in our lives? What “snow prints” should be apparent so that others will want to know about our faith?
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23a
The fruit of the Spirit is evidence of a life lived in Christ. When unbelievers see these characteristics in our lives, they notice a difference. How often do these characteristics prove themselves in your life? When others see these characteristics in our lives, it should draw glory to our Father in heaven. People notice when our lives are dominated by the fruit of the Spirit in our interactions with each other and in our lives in general. Just as the evidence left in the snow led others to know about my four-legged friends, the evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives will prove our relationship with Christ and evidence of our faith.
