The time has come to deck the halls, and what home is complete without a precious Christmas village? Christmas village homes have been around for decades, and although the concept has remained the same, the styles have definitely changed! I’m going to show you some fun ways to spruce up traditional Christmas village houses.
First, let’s talk about where to find the little houses. If you are looking for nice ceramic houses, start looking at thrift stores and yard sales! You can also search Facebook Marketplace for a good deal. You can typically find the houses for around $1-$2 each.
If you don’t have time to look around and you want something now, head over to Dollar Tree and grab the plastic ones for $1.25! You can’t beat the price, and they also include a little light inside. Another great thing about plastic is the weight! If you are looking to elevate them on a pedestal or place them in a wreath or tree, the lightweight plastic will be your friend!
Now, let’s look at a few ways to update the traditional Christmas villages!
Dollar Tree Christmas Village Makeover
For this makeover, I took the basic plastic village pieces from Dollar Tree and spray painted them white to create a beautiful but simple Christmas village. This was a super simple DIY that will match any decor!
Anthropology Inspired Winter Village Wreath
For this wreath, I painted the Dollar Tree village pieces in vibrant colors and wired them into a flocked evergreen wreath. The little bottle brush trees were glued beside the buildings to create this nontraditional Christmas village! How fun is this?
Pottery Barn Inspired Christmas Village
How beautiful are these winter village houses crafted by Iris Nacole? She took the basic Dollar Tree winter village pieces and painted them to resemble the Pottery Barn Christmas village. I love how she used metallic sharpie markers to highlight the architectural features, and the glitter really added the perfect amount of sparkle!
Dollar Tree Christmas Village Remake
For the Love of Decorating gave the Dollar Tree village a major facelift by whitewashing the buildings. I love how the technique toned down the vibrant hues but still allowed some color to seep through. It really gave this winter village a more expensive and high end appearance.
How to Revive Old Christmas Village
Over at South House Designs, they took an old ceramic winter village and revived it! Using glossy white paint, a few accent colors and some faux snow, the ceramic houses were transformed into beautiful, updated decor pieces. She even explains how to place them in your tree and properly secure them!
Are you inspired now to get creative with a Christmas winter village? I think these ideas are so fun and would make a great Christmas craft this season! I would love to see your winter village transformations!
