Pottery is all the rage right now in home décor! The natural colors paired with fresh evergreens is such a clean and classic look that is gracing all the home magazines. While browsing the web, I was so surprised at the price! Some of those beautiful pieces will cost you a pretty penny. So what did I do? You guessed it…I tried my hand at making some faux pottery!
For this project, I headed to the Dollar Tree to grab some cheap pieces, just in case I ruined them!
Here is what I used:
– Gold beaded charger – Dollar Tree
– Glass candy jar – Dollar Tree
– Apple Barrel paints – Country Gray, Warm Buff and Antique Parchment
– Baking soda
– Foam paint brush
I love a good challenge, so this project had me excited!
The first thing I did was paint the pieces with the Country Gray. I applied two coats of the gray. Painting glass is a little bit trickier, so for the second coat, make sure you brush very lightly over the bottom coat. If you go back and forth with your brush, the bottom coat WILL start to peel off. Be careful with this step.
A tip for painting on glass is to paint multiple LIGHT coats. Do not go heavy on the paint.
After the second coat has completely dried, it’s time to paint with the next color, Warm Buff. Now, here is where you are going to grab the baking soda! I added baking soda to the paint and mixed it well with my foam brush. The paint will get thicker and have a grainy texture to it. You will want to add about half as much baking soda as you have paint. So, if you have two tablespoons of paint, add one tablespoon of baking soda.
Using my foam brush, I applied the paint rather thick. Again, be careful with your glass piece. Be sure to brush in one direction and not in a back and forth motion. Make sure you remember to paint the top and inside rim of the jar as well.
For the plate, I applied the paint in a circular pattern around the plate. I started around the rim and worked my way to the center of the plate.
After applying the textured paint, you will want to allow the pieces to COMPLETELY dry. This is how they looked after drying.
Now it was time for the final step, applying the white top coat. For this step, I did not add any baking soda to the paint. I simply painted over the textured paint. I used Apple Barrel’s Antique Parchment. With the foam brush, I lightly painted on the white.
For the plate, I again painted in a circular motion, going over it several times.
I love how the neutral colors are blending to add dimension and texture! These definitely do not look like Dollar Tree pieces!
Once dried, I was THRILLED with the way they turned out! They look and FEEL like pottery pieces!
I cannot wait to add some spring florals to this little jar! This new painting technique would be awesome to use on plastic flower pots! My minding is exploding now thinking of all the possibilities and ways to use this paint. To think, this whole project cost less than $5!
What do you think of this faux pottery hack? What do YOU want to paint? I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

If you spray a coat of polyurethane over your first coat of paint you can add next coat no problem with it coming off.
