How many times have you fallen in love with a décor piece, only to look at the price tag and walk away? When something is out of my budget, I think of how I can make it for less. Well, the other day…I decided to tackle the wildly popular winter village wreath from Anthroplogie. This wreath has been sold out for quite a while and is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find.
I absolutely LOVE the wreath, and it’s perfect for the upcoming winter months. It’s so colorful and fun, and I’m going to show you how I recreated it on a budget that all of us can afford!
Most of the supplies I used are from the Dollar Tree. I saw these little houses as soon as I
walked in and decided to give them a makeover.
Supplies Needed:
Flocked wreath – I purchased mine at Walmart for 25% off
Small houses or buildings – mine came from the Dollar Tree
Wire bottle brush trees – Dollar Tree
Fake snow
Acrylic paint – I used Apple Barrel brand from Walmart
Cotton balls
Spray adhesive
Paint brushes
Floral Wire
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
The first step in this process is to paint all of your houses and buildings white. The buildings I purchased from Dollar Tree were VERY colorful and had Christmas accents, so I wanted to start with a clean slate.
I knew I wanted to paint the entire building a solid color and the roof a brown shade. After all the houses dried completely, I started mixing my paints.
I mixed Peachy Pink with a little white for the first house. You can lighten your shade by adding a little more white if desired.
For the next house, I mixed Key West with Caribbean and then added a little white to achieve
the desired color.
For the next house, I mixed Kings Gold with Territorial Beige. I accidentally added a little too much brown, so I had to go back over it with a shade lighter to get to a mustard color.
For the last house, I mixed white with a tiny amount of Territorial Beige to land on a soft beige color.
After the bases were dried, I moved on to painting the roof of each house. I used Territorial Beige for all of the roofs except for the yellow house. I was afraid it would look too dark on the yellow, so I added some white to lighten the shade.
The next step was to add some glittery fake snow to the houses. Since I was using spray adhesive, I needed a controlled area to avoid overspray onto other items. I simply flipped a cardboard box on its side and sprayed each item inside the box. There are many different spray adhesives that will work. I just happened to have some fabric basting spray on hand, so I used it, and it worked just fine.
Once sprayed, I sprinkled the snow on the tops and sides of each house and set them aside to dry.
Here are all the little houses painted and coated with snow. Now it’s time to place them into
the wreath with the wire bottle brush trees.
I scattered them around the wreath and used floral wire to secure them to the wire frame.
If you are unable to secure it with wire, then you will need to use hot glue. Apply the hot glue all over the back and press into the wreath.
Then, I scattered the trees around the wreath as well, positioning some beside the houses. I drizzled hot glue on the backs of the trees and pushed them into the wreath.
The final step is adding the cotton beneath the houses. I lightly pulled and stretch the cotton balls to create a nice fluffy look. I sprayed a little adhesive on them and added some sparkle snow.
Then I placed the cotton under the houses using hot glue.
How absolutely precious is this wreath?! Can you believe this came in under $30! Unbelievable!
A little paint can completely transform something, and it definitely took these houses to a new level! They look so much more expensive than $1.25.
